redeemingchildhood

I am often asked where to begin the journey toward I am often asked where to begin the journey toward a child’s optimal health.

Should you start with a primary care or functional medicine doctor, or perhaps a homeopath or chiropractor?

Or maybe you begin by simply learning more about topics like brain development, mold and toxins, nourishing foods, and autoimmunity.

Whatever your initial step is, it will be unique to you.

To help you on your journey, I’ve compiled a resource list of physicians, educators, therapists, and other leaders in the field of children’s neurological health. These recommendations come from the PANS parenting community and could be the right first step for you.

If you have a resource to add to the list, let me know! A book and podcast recommendation list is coming soon as well.

Click on the link in the bio above to see the complete list. ✨

Good morning, Friends! I know that PANS/PANDAS a Good morning, Friends!

I know that PANS/PANDAS and other neurological challenges can be isolating and overwhelming, but we don’t have to do it alone!

I would like to extend an invite to anyone who could use care and community, to join us next Tuesday (and again in August) for a time of prayer and support! If you are currently in the trenches or if you have a friend or family who is struggling or has questions, please join us and bring them along!

A few other veteran PANS moms and I will be hosting our time and we would love to see you there. Pm me for more details and exact location!

To the mom with tired eyes and a weary spirit, you To the mom with tired eyes and a weary spirit, you are seen.

To the mom wondering how to bring calm to the storm inside your little one, you are known.

To the mom fighting to stay present, when every urge inside says to run, you are not alone.

Lift your eyes to the one who sees, knows, and never leaves. He’s got you. ✨

Many of us have experienced the grounding presence Many of us have experienced the grounding presence of another person in our life. Perhaps it was a friend, a spouse, or a parent. Someone whom makes you feel deeply known.

For our children, we are an anchoring relationship, especially when life feels overwhelming, unpredictable, and scary. For children who have endured trauma, or have neurological conditions, having a brain that perceives the world differently can make everyday life feel this way.

When my own children started show signs of neurological distress, my first priority became connecting with them. To have moments of eye contact, tender touch, and playful laughter, that broke up otherwise days or weeks of neurological & behavioral chaos.

These touchpoints of connection communicate to a struggling child,

“I am with you, you are not alone. This is scary, but I’m not leaving.”

We cannot change all of the circumstances our children face, but we can be an anchor for them through the storm.

Any visual learners in this crowd? Scribbled in m Any visual learners in this crowd?

Scribbled in my notebooks and journals over the years are diagrams like this. They help me visualize and understand how our bodies work. Maybe you feel that way too?

As beautifully and intricately made as our brains and bodies are, sometimes they are no match for the accumulation of stressors, toxins, and pathogens in our world.

Pictured above are three of the most influential contributors to childhood PANS/PANDAS, as well as the specific exposures, infections, etc., in each category. When there are enough risk factors present, there is a high probability that the immune system will misdirect and begin to attack the brain, rather than attack the real culprit. (Read our post titled “What is PANS?” to learn more.)

Why does this matter? Because although these harmful components exist in our world, we have so much influence to minimize our children’s exposure to them, WHEN WE KNOW WHAT THEY ARE. Knowledge is indeed power.

Is anything on this list surprising or unfamiliar to you? Reply in the comments below if so!

We know that every decision we make towards whole body health is vital to the well-being of our kiddos!

More on this soon…✨

Hearing that my kids had PANS/PANDAS for the first Hearing that my kids had PANS/PANDAS for the first time, left me with so many unknowns. Namely, what exactly was happening in their brains, bodies, and immune systems? After a few years of research and experience, here’s my working definition of what we were/are dealing with:

PANS is an acronym for pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome. It is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system has a misguided response to infections and environmental exposures. This immune response mounts an attack on the basal ganglia (the main “motor circuit board”) of the brain rather than the infection. When this happens, there can be an intense onset of neurological behaviors such as rage, aggression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), food restriction, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, anxiety, loss of fine motor skills, sensory issues, emotional dysregulation, and more.

Often children who have PANS have had a recent infection—either viral or bacterial, such as streptococcus (more commonly known as strep) or Lyme disease—as well as continued environmental exposures, such as mold and metal toxicity, glyphosate, and more. Stress, trauma, and adrenal fatigue can also play a part in taxing an already-struggling immune system, leading to further compromise. When the immune system is overwhelmed with these risk factors, it becomes susceptible to an autoimmune response that resembles mental illness.

Furthermore, because the immune system is preoccupied attacking the basal ganglia, it is not efficiently eliminating the toxins and infections that began the autoimmune cascade and makes way for opportunistic pathogens and infections to thrive.

My husband and I came into parenting with hopeful My husband and I came into parenting with hopeful expectations. We couldn’t wait to grow our family; To share our love of the outdoors, adventuring, and building things together with our children. We were optimistic that our child-raising years would be full of only the best things.

We did not anticipate that hard things would grow alongside beautiful things—that mental and behavioral health challenges would take root in the early years of our children’s lives and silently develop until our home was bursting at the seams with the kind of chaos that requires professional help.

But there I was, nine years into motherhood, gripping the phone while the behavioral therapist was on the other end. He had come to play an essential role in our lives, helping us navigate the complexities of health challenges that we were facing with each one of our children.

“There is a therapeutic inpatient program that I think could help your daughter.”

My hands started shaking when he spoke these words. My sweet girl, barely seven years old at the time, had just been evaluated for intrusive thought obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). My daughter had the highest results that our therapist had ever seen in a young child…

Last summer we bought a new-to-us camper a week be Last summer we bought a new-to-us camper a week before vacation. The layout was perfect and simple but it had an overwhelming cushion pattern, heavy brown cornice boards and curtains, and lots of sticky add ons from the previous owner.

I flipped some of the cushions upside down and instantly saw a beachy/boho/vintage vibe emerging… Since we planned to take it to the beach for our family vacations, it was meant to be.

We scrubbed it, removed the broken shades and cornices, added linen curtains and a few accessories, and made shell trays for the walls, which we we add trinkets to as we travel.

It’s become such a sweet home away from home, so I thought I would share some pictures. I snapped these before we brought in 10 bags, 12 pillows, everyone’s shoes and personal belongings, and food for a week😂 it’s not nearly as #aesthetic when it’s housing us!

Swipe to the end to see a few before pictures from the original listing (cushions were covered in crib sheets:)
